Things to Beware of, When Hiring a Company to Install Hardwood Flooring
1. Companies offering free installation. This is a bait and switch. No one works for free, especially doing very hard physical labor. These companies will require you to purchase the flooring from them. Usually they provide you with inferior flooring that costs them very little. The mark it up 300%-600% per square foot. They also markup all of the installation materials by a large amount. Because of these huge markups on the flooring they tell you that installation is free.
2. Avoid companies offering to install solid hardwood flooring on a concrete slab sub-floor. Doing this is just a disaster waiting to happen. Concrete is porous. It wicks moisture from the earth upwards. The moisture then wicks into your floor via capillary action. Solid hardwood does not react well to moisture. It will swell, buckle and delaminate. Companies make the claim that they can do this because there are glue manufacturers that claim it can be done with their products. The glue has a moisture barrier built in. It’s true that the glue does block moisture, but there’s a catch. If you read the warranty information from the glue manufacturer, they require the glue coverage on the back of the wood to be 100% for their warranty to apply. The fact is, that it’s IMPOSSIBLE to get 100% coverage on hundreds or thousands of square feet. When you’re placing the floor down onto the glue, air bubbles can sometimes get trapped. Those air bubbles can create pin holes that allow moisture to enter the wood. If there’s a warranty claim the glue manufacturer will inspect the glue application and if they find holes in the glue they will NOT cover it. If you’re on a concrete slab, you should consider Engineered, LVP or Laminate flooring.
